Dark Comedy
Definition & Conventions:
Dark comedy is a genre which involves elements of comedy and tragedy, as per the name. The genre often has gloomy atmospheres and satire. It is also known as 'Black Comedy' or 'Morbid Humour'. It is a comedic style that makes fun out of topics generally thought as taboos. Although it includes humour, it also provokes serious thoughts and discussions about topics that would otherwise be ignored. Most common topics are murder, political corruption, racial or sexual stereotypes, and more. One of the best examples of this genre are the film 'Parasite', released in 2019, and Deadpool. The conventions include all types of shots but wide angles and close ups are used more frequently. Wide shots allow the situations to feel more 'real', making the audience feel more attached. Dull lighting is also used often. The non-diegetic sound involves a rather upbeat/catchy soundtrack which creates contrast to the heavy topics discussed, making the overall mood lighter and enjoyable.
Difference between Dark Comedy and Comedy:
Comedy tends to focus on just humour and creates a more comfortable environment, allowing the audience to relax. Whereas, as mentioned before, Dark Comedy creates slight discomfort while talking about serious topics. The humour is an addition to those topics, to make it less aggressive. In the end, both genres are intended to entertain and induce laughter among the viewers.
What is expected?
Dark comedy films should have a seriousness to them as well as a humorous tone. The conventions should have a lot of contrast to support the genre and its theme. Films with this genre should be able to present the bright side of rather difficult subjects and engage the audience too.
